Among the updates is a new compliance bond requirement, aimed at improving consumer protection and raising accountability standards for contractors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legislation, which amended the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contractors\u2019 Business Registration Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CBRA) and introduced the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pub.njleg.gov\/Bills\/2024\/S1000\/764_I1.HTM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Improvement and Home Elevation Contractor Licensing Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>requires all home improvement and home elevation contractors to provide financial security<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the form of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A compliance bond<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An irrevocable letter of credit<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another acceptable securities. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must meet these requirements to obtain, renew or reinstate a contractor registration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Do These Changes Mean for Me?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a contractor in New Jersey, here\u2019s what this means for you. Previously, contractors only needed to register with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) to operate. Now, you must obtain a license with several new requirements, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Completing an approved training program<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Passing a licensing exam<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Meeting stricter financial security and insurance obligations<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These measures are intended to ensure that licensed contractors meet high professional standards, protecting consumers and businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>The training program and licensing exam have not been rolled out yet. However, the bond and insurance financial security requirements have been required as of April 2025.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Home Improvement Contractor Compliance Bond Requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey home improvement contractors need $10,000\u2013$50,000 in compliance surety bond coverage.
