If you have a California occupational license that requires a surety bond, renewing your bond on time is more important than ever. While there are no new legislative changes, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently announced that it’s no longer accepting backdated bonds. This means that if your bond expires, your license will be automatically canceled.

Who Needs to Maintain an Active Bond?
The following California DMV occupational licensees need to have an active surety bond at all times:
- Driving schools
- ATV training organizations
- In-person and online traffic violator schools
- Vehicle lessor-retailers
- Motor vehicle dealers and wholesalers
- Registration servicers
- Vehicle verifiers
- Vehicle remanufacturers
- Employer testing program participants
If you don’t renew your bond on time, your license will be automatically cancelled. You’ll then need to submit a new license application to reinstate it.
How Do I Renew My Occupational License Bond?
If you already have an active surety bond, all you need to do is follow your surety company’s renewal instructions and file it with the DMV. Your bond expiration date is usually different from your license expiration.

How Do I File My Bond?
If you’re a first-time applicant or need a new bond form, you can submit it either:
- Online through your account portal
- By mail with a wet signature
The DMV recommends submitting your bond online, since it has a shorter processing time. Depending on your license type, we’ll either mail or email you the original bond form.
If you have an existing bond with us, we’ll automatically renew it once you pay the renewal premium. Since you’re just extending your bond term, no further action is needed. However, do check your CA DMV Occupational Licensing portal and verify your surety provider if needed.
However, if your bond was canceled and then reinstated, you must file a reinstatement notice with the DMV. Even if you purchased a new bond before your license expires, you are not officially bonded until you file the form with the DMV.
What If There’s an Error on My Bond Form?
If your bond has incorrect information, the DMV might reject it, putting your license at risk. Most errors can be fixed by filing a bond rider, which is the only legal way to update your existing bond.
