What are the required title bond amounts in Alabama?

The required bond amounts are broken down by vehicle type and year:

Trailers:

Passenger vehicles and pickup trucks:

*Manufactured home bond requests must be initiated through a designated agent of the Revenue Department using the electronic title application processing system (ETAPS).

Applicants must obtain a bond form listing the amount from the state before having a bond issued. Alabama utilizes the online Motor Vehicle Title Registration & Insurance Portal to get the bond form required.

Why are certificate of title bonds required?

To obtain a proper title for a vehicle with a lost or stolen title in Alabama, the vehicle owner must purchase a three-year surety bond. By posting an Alabama certificate of title bond, the principal (owner of the vehicle) guarantees that he or she is the sole owner of the purchased vehicle and that the vehicle was not obtained under fraudulent pretenses.

Information needed for the Alabama title surety bond application

Alabama certificate of title bonds are required by the Motor Vehicle Division of the Alabama Department of Revenue. These bonds remain valid for three years from the effective date. The following must be indicated on the bond form:

  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • Vehicle model
  • Vehicle body type
  • Vehicle year
  • Vehicle’s number of cylinders
  • Vehicle make
  • A detailed explanation as to why the applicant is requesting a title under bond and what efforts were made to obtain a properly assigned valid certificate of title
  • Whether the vehicle is a utility trailer
  • Whether the vehicle was purchased as a body, parts, salvage or without an engine
  • Wnformation for the person the vehicle was purchased from
  • Wnformation for the current owner of the vehicle

A bill of sale with the vehicle identification number or an outstanding title or registration in the name of the applicant must be attached to application when the bonds amounts is greater than $25,000.
