How to become a pest control company in California

To legally conduct business as a pest control company in California, applicants must first obtain a license. Pest control business licenses run for two years, and the expiration date depends on the first letter of the business name. A-L licenses expire on December 31 of even-numbered years, while M-Z licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years. The following is a list of requirements to become a legally licensed pest control company in California:

  • Obtain $12,500 surety bond
  • Complete pest control business license application
  • File fictitious business name statement
  • Acquire certificate of good standing
  • Maintain valid worker’s compensation insurance policy
  • Pay $160 application fee

Once a company is licensed, the following must be done in order for the license to remain active:

  • Maintain pest control application records for two years
  • Record pesticide use for two years
  • Submit pesticide use reports to county agricultural commissioner’s office
  • Possess valid permits for use of restricted materials

For license renewals, pest control companies must complete a pest control business renewal application and pay the renewal fee of $320 and $160 per each additional branch. These materials must be submitted by December 31.
