Why do I need this bond?

The California Department of Consumer Affairs’ Structural Pest Control Board requires pest control companies to post $12,500 surety bonds as part of the registration process.

By posting a California exterminator company surety bond, principals (pest control companies) pledge to adhere to provisions of Division 3, Chapter 14 of the Business and Professions Code of the State of California. The bond also ensures reimbursement is available to any person who is damaged by the company’s fraud, dishonesty, or general noncompliance with applicable law.

What’s the fine print?

California pest control company bonds remain in full force and effect until canceled. The surety can cancel the bond with 30 days’ notice in accordance with Section 996.320 of the Code of Civil Procedure.

How to become a pest control company in California

To legally conduct business as a pest control company in California, applicants must first obtain a license. Pest control business licenses run for two years, and the expiration date depends on the first letter of the business name. A-L licenses expire on December 31 of even-numbered years, while M-Z licenses expire on December 31 of odd-numbered years. The following is a list of requirements to become a legally licensed pest control company in California:

  • Obtain $12,500 surety bond
  • Complete pest control business license application
  • File fictitious business name statement
  • Acquire certificate of good standing
  • Maintain valid worker’s compensation insurance policy
  • Pay $160 application fee

Once a company is licensed, the following must be done in order for the license to remain active:

  • Maintain pest control application records for two years
  • Record pesticide use for two years
  • Submit pesticide use reports to county agricultural commissioner’s office
  • Possess valid permits for use of restricted materials

For license renewals, pest control companies must complete a pest control business renewal application and pay the renewal fee of $320 and $160 per each additional branch. These materials must be submitted by December 31.
