What is a Louisiana contractor license bond?

"Louisiana contractor license bond” is a blanket term for the different surety bonds individual cities and parishes require for contractor licensing. The state does not require a surety bond be filed for contractor licensing at the state level. Louisiana Revised Statutes Title 37 Chapter 24 does, however, give contractors the option to file a surety bond with the state if they're unable to prove a net worth of at least $10,000 as required for state contractors license issuance.

Why do you need a licensed contractor bond in Louisiana?

Some cities and parishes in Louisiana require a contractor bond be filed before issuing a local contractor license. Although bond terms vary depending on a city or parish's exact requirements, these bonds generally protect the licensing authority and consumers from harm resulting from contractor noncompliance. A contractor's surety company will pay valid claims up to the full bond amount, which the bonded and licensed contractor must reimburse in full.

Who regulates licensing for contractors?

The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors enforces state license requirements for contractors. You can contact the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors by calling 1(225)765-2301. Your local city or parish might also enforce its own  contractor license and surety bond requirement.
