How to Get an Alabama Heating & Air Conditioning or Refrigeration Contractor License
Complete the steps below to apply for your Alabama HVAC license or refrigeration contractor license.
Step 1: Determine license type
Determine if you need a heating and air conditioning contractor license, a refrigeration contractor license, or both.
- Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor: Installs, services and/or repairs HVAC apparatus
- Refrigeration Contractor: Installs, services and/or repairs commercial refrigeration equipment
Step 2: Take the license exam
Apply online for the HACR HVAC/Refrigeration Examination for your license specialty.
Pay the $175 exam fee via check to “State of Alabama.”
Step 3: Register your business
After passing the exam, ensure you have a registered business name and corporation documents to submit to the Board.
Use this information to complete the Business Information Form (AL-2).
Step 4: Pay the certification fee
Pay the annual $220 certification fee to the State of Alabama via check, credit card or money order.
Step 5: Get a surety bond
