How Do I Get a Public Adjuster License in New Jersey?
To get a public adjuster license in New Jersey, follow these five steps:
Step 1: Verify eligibility
Anyone who is at least 18 years old, whether a state resident or not, can apply for a public adjuster license.
However, New Jersey doesn’t offer reciprocal licensing. Nonresidents must already be licensed in their home state. Any waivers for exams or continuing education are at the Department’s discretion.
Step 2: Pass an exam
Before you can apply, you must pass the PSI public adjuster exam with a score of 70%. The exam tests basic insurance product knowledge as well as state-specific regulations.
Register to take the exam remotely or in-person and pay the $38 fee. You must pass within one year of applying for a license.
Step 3: Complete a background check
Next, complete the Live Scan fingerprinting process. Schedule an appointment online using the public adjuster code 2F1F7N.
Note: Nonresident applicants are exempt.
Step 4: Purchase a surety bond
Under NJ Revised Statutes 17:22B-12, all public adjusters must file a $10,000 surety bond. This protects clients from financial harm due to fraudulent or negligent insurance adjusters.

Apply online via the National Insurance Producer Registry. Select either the resident or nonresident adjuster license.
You will need to upload the following supporting documents:
- 2 passport-size photographs
- Exam score report
- PCN number from your fingerprint scanning session
- If applying as a business entity, attach the articles of incorporation
- If you’ve ever been convicted of a felony, attach a written statement and certified copies of the related court documents

How to Renew Your Public Claims Adjuster License
New Jersey public claims adjuster licenses expire biennially on the last day of your birth month. For business entities, the expiration date is May 31.
To renew, you must first complete 15 hours of approved continuing education courses. You can choose any combination of courses from the listed offerings.
Then, submit the renewal application, including payment for the $50 fee and proof of an up-to-date surety bond.
