Arizona Revised Statutes 28-5736 authorizes the Department of Transportation to require interstate users or applicants to file a surety bond in certain situations. Arizona DOT form 96-0224 is officially titled the “IFTA Bond” and specifically requires IFTA licensees to perform all acts and duties required by law and pay all money owed to the state. If an IFTA licensee fails to do so, their issuing surety company will pay valid claims up to the full bond amount, which the IFTA carrier must reimburse.

Why is the Arizona IFTA bond required?

The Arizona Department of Transportation New Carrier Checklist requires you to file a surety bond as an IFTA applicant if any of the following apply.

  • You or your previous license is not in good standing with another member jurisdiction.
  • You don't have a verifiable history as a motor carrier in Arizona or any other member jurisdiction.
