How Does an Arkansas Pest Control Bond Work?

An Arkansas pest control bond is a legal contract between three parties:

  1. Principal: The pest control company purchasing the bond
  2. Obligee: The Arkansas State Plant Board requiring the bond
  3. Surety: The provider issuing the bond

Under this contract, you, as the principal, promise to uphold the Arkansas Pest Control Law.

If you break the bond terms, harmed parties can file claims on the bond. The surety will validate and pay claims up to the full bond amount. However, you are ultimately responsible for refunding the surety.

Who Needs a Household Pest and Rodent Control Bond?

The Board requires the following pest control license classifications to file a surety bond:

  • Termites and Other Structural Pests (Classification 1): Inspecting, preventing and removing pests that cause structural house damage, such as termites and other wood-damaging insects or fungi
  • Household Pest and Rodent Control (Classification 2): General pest control within residential buildings, including common pests like insects, rodents and spiders

Classification 2 requires a $50,000 bond, and Classification 1 requires a $100,000 bond. If you hold both licenses, you need a $100,000 bond.

How to Open a Household Pest Control Business in Arkansas

The Arkansas State Plant Board regulates 10 classifications of pest control licenses and certificates. Classifications 1 (termites and other structural pests) and 2 (household pest and rodent control) require a surety bond and insurance coverage.

What License Type Do I Need?

The Board requires every pest control business owner to be a License Holder. Holders must either employ an Operator or also be licensed as one. Operators directly oversee the execution of pest control services.

All employees performing pest control services must register as agents. Each Operator can supervise up to 20 agents.

How to Become a License Holder

To open a household pest control business, follow these steps:

  1. Verify Eligibility: Determine your license classification based on the type of work you’ll be performing. You must have one year of work experience or two years of college credit with at least one basic course in entomology.
  2. Purchase a Surety Bond: Purchase either a $50,000 or $100,000 surety bond, depending on your license type.
  3. Purchase Insurance Coverage: Purchase a general liability insurance policy, based on your license type.
  4. Complete the License Holder Application: Print and mail the application form. Your fee will vary depending on the license type and number of employees.
  5. Pass an Exam: You are eligible to take the pest control operator exam five business days after submitting your application. Pay the $100 fee and the additional $30 fee if taken online.

Once approved, the Board will email a copy of your license to print.

How Do I Renew My License?

Arkansas pest control licenses are valid for one year from July 1 through June 30. To renew, complete the online form and provide proof of an up-to-date surety bond.
