  • Regulating Body: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) — Truck Permit Office
  • Required Coverage: $1,000 minimum, must cover your monthly permit bill rounded to the nearest thousand
  • Premium: $100 for a $1,000 bond; credit-based for larger bonds

What Is a Louisiana Oversize/Overweight Hauling Bond?

A Louisiana oversize and overweight hauling bond lets you open a permit charge account with the DOTD Truck Permit Office. With a charge account, you get your permits now and pay for them later on a monthly invoice.

The bond guarantees you pay that invoice. If you don’t pay, the state can collect from the bond.

How Much Coverage Do I Need?

Your bond must be at least $1,000. If your permit bill goes over $1,000 a month, raise your bond in $1,000 steps until it equals or exceeds your monthly bill.

Example: If you spend about $3,500 a month on permits, you need a $4,000 bond.

How Much Does the Bond Cost?

A $1,000 Louisiana hauling bond costs just $100 for one year or $250 for three years. You can buy it online in minutes and skip the credit check.

Need more coverage? $2,000–$100,000 bonds cost a small percentage of the bond amount. Your rate depends mostly on your personal credit. Apply for your free quote now!

Who Needs This Bond?

The Louisiana DOTD requires this bond from any hauler who wants a permit charge account. You don’t need it if you pay for each permit by credit card, check, or prepaid permit form.

You can also open a charge account with:

  • A cash bond (cashier’s check or certified check)
  • An irrevocable letter of credit

Most haulers choose a surety bond since this option does not tie up cash collateral.

Note: This bond doesn’t replace your insurance.

Louisiana DOTD Truck Permit Office

Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9042

How Does the Bond Work?

The LA oversize or overweight hauling bond is a legal contract between three parties:

  1. Principal: You, the hauler buying the bond
  2. Obligee: The Louisiana DOTD, which requires the bond
  3. Surety: The company that backs the bond

The bond holds you to Louisiana’s permit rules under Louisiana Administrative Code Title 73, Part I, Chapter 7.

You must pay your full permit invoice within 30 days of the billing date. If you don’t, DOTD can shut off your charge account and file a claim on your bond.

The surety pays valid claims up to the bond amount. You must then pay the surety back.

How Do I Renew or Cancel My Bond?

Your bond has a one-year term. To renew it, just pay your renewal invoice. We’ll start contacting you by phone and email 90 days before it expires.

The surety can cancel the bond by sending written notice to the DOTD Truck Permit Office. The cancellation takes effect 30 days after DOTD receives the notice. If you no longer need the bond, you can let it expire or contact your surety provider.
