What is a Pennsylvania auto dealer bond?

Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes Title 75 Section 1335 requires motor vehicle dealers and manufacturers file a $20,000 surety before they can be licensed to sell or manufacture vehicles in the state. State form MV-375 is officially titled the “Manufacturer/Dealer/Full Agent/Card Agent/Messenger Service/Salvor Bond,” but it's also known as the “auto dealer bond” or “motor vehicle dealer bond.” This bond specifically requires that licensed dealers and manufacturers comply with all laws that regulate auto dealerships.

Note: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation enforces separate license requirements for vehicle card agents, salvors, manufacturers, issuing agents, and messenger services, but the same MV-375 form is used. You can find more detailed information about other Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Bond license types on our separate page.

Why is a Pennsylvania car dealer bond required?

By filing this bond, auto dealers agree to operate their dealerships according to state laws. If they fail to do so, the issuing surety company will pay valid claims up to the full $20,000 bond amount for losses suffered by the state or individual consumers. The bonded dealer must then reimburse the surety company for all damages paid.

Who regulates auto dealers and vehicle manufacturers?

The Pennsylvania State Board of Vehicle Manufacturers, Dealers and Salespersons enforces license and surety bond requirements for motor vehicle dealers and manufacturers. If you have questions about your application, your license status, or surety bond requirements, you can call the board at 1(717)783-1697 or email [email protected].
